Navratri Key Facts The word "Navratri" comes from two words, "Nav" as-in nine and "ratri" as-in nights. That's nine nights of prayers, chanting, meditation and celebration. The word "Navratri" comes from combination of three words, "Nav" , "ra" and "tri". The celebration of "Navratri" occurs over nine days. Navratri is observed twice a year, in the spring (Chaitra Navratri) and in the fall (Sharad Navratri). On the 9th day of Chaitra "Navratri" everyone also celebrates "Ram Navami", celebration for the birth of Ramji. After nine days of Sharad Navratri, the 10th day is celebrated as "Dussehra".
